Dale Tincher - Vietnam - 1970 - 71

I am proud to have served with the 1st Cavalry Division (1st and 2nd of the 8th) in Vietnam and The 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) in the U.S.

In the "bush". I'm on the right.  I was a Lieutenant & platoon leader.  One of our sergeants is in the middle,  my Radio Telephone Operator (RTO) is on the left.

Getting ready to go back to the jungle.  The pack weighed 70 pounds.

He was too cute to refuse.  We bought the cokes.

My Company Commander Captain Neal. He spoke fluent Vietnamese - a good officer.

Me in the rear area.  The command bunker behind
me got shelled a few times

It rained for weeks during the monsoon season.  We stayed soaked much of the time.  It was warm - no problem.

Our Kit Carson Scouts.   Former Viet Cong who helped us navigate and stay alive

Gunship view.  Gunships and artillery shot up the area prior to our landing.

Leisure time - we had lots of it.

A Sergeant with whom I worked

Some of our platoon.  Lots of comradery

My replacement trying to adjust to the heat.  I don't think he ever did adjust.

A Viet Cong bunker we discovered.  They had recently left.  We sounded like elephants walking through the jungle.  We never surprised them.  (My camera was wet.)

Bien Hoa rear area.  The showers were cold, but it was far better than the bush and we had maid service for a couple dollars a week.

I was Battalion S-1 (admin officer) for a period.

With some of our sergeants

Saigon street scene.  Everything was extremely inexpensive.

Saigon street area.  I visited Saigon once.

More Saigon

Saigon taxi

Saigon bicycle / motorcycle traffic

More S-1 admin officer duty

He stayed with us most of the time - a great young man

Vietnamese waving as we drove by.  I don't like to think about their futures.  All Americans were considered to be wealthy. We were, compared to their standards.

A good salesman!
